Thai potluck lunch at Cookstr

March 9, 2010

Could you smell the fish sauce fumes wafting from the Cookstr offices today?  We just had the best lunch ever.  From time to time, our merry little band gathers together around a potluck meal of some kind, and we’ve decided to make it a regular feature, picking a different theme every month or so.  Today was Thai.

It was just SO MUCH FUN, everyone all busily unpacking their plastic containers, organizing turns at the microwave, finally realizing that there was no way everything was going to end up hot at the same time, and that that was no big deal.

Mikaela made an amazing fresh crunchy cabbage salad with a sweet and sour dipping sauce which, since she skipped the boiling step, doubled as a salad dressing.

Abby made dumplings and nicely chewy Pad Thai.

I made teeny little crab cakes, with slivered kaffir lime leaves.

Sarah made a really flavorful spicy cabbage salad, omitting the chicken for a veggie version.

Brad made amazing green chicken curry, Stan improvised a Thai pork dish (well, actually, we found out it was really his wife who made it), and so on.  If you’re looking to shake up things at your office once a month, and take a break from the tedium of the by-the-pound salad bar, then we urge you to consider a pot luck feast.

Next month the theme is Latin Caribbean, suggested by Rachel (who made Thai fried rice today).

We can’t wait.

But first, to close out the Thai theme in a cross-cultural way, Sarah and I wrote a haiku about fish sauce:

Mysterious stinky fish sauce

Thailand’s salt, hub of the wheel

Our breath reflects this

Yes, we know how nerdy we are.
