The Cookstr Weekly: Recipes to Cool You Off

July 1, 2014
After spending months lamenting the slushy, bitter winter we had on the east coast, I hate to complain about the heat already. But I live in a New York apartment with no air conditioning, so I’m planning ahead for meals that will make the next few months bearable.
When the temperature heats up, there’s no need to sit around fanning yourself limply and chewing on ice chips. Chilled soups, cold pastas, seafood salads, and a generous helping of cucumbers should do the trick. Of course, we’d never forget the ice cream.
Warmest regards,

For breakfast, dessert, or an afternoon pick-me-up, this smoothie is refreshing and healthy. Chia seeds, which create an almost pudding-like texture here, provide an excellent source of omega-3s and lots of fiber, and the combination of coconut water and coconut milk is both creamy and hydrating. Try pouring the mixture into ice-pop molds for sumptuous and colorful dairy-free frozen popsicles.

The Sundae of Broken Dreams

In Brooklyn, pretzel rods are served with egg creams, and we imagine that it’s every pretzel rod’s dream to sit proudly on the soda fountain counter. However, the journey to the fountain is rife with danger. Baked, salted, packaged, and shipped off into the unknown, the brittle truth is that not all pretzel dreams are realized. This sad fact was made readily apparent when we received our first delivery of pretzel rods, broken.

“A classic American story of rags to riches, perseverance and triumph, the broken pretzel was resurrected in the Sundae of Broken Dreams, alongside vanilla ice cream, swimming in caramel, and blanketed by whipped cream.”
